he fantastic folclore was a series of posters for the Musée des Vampires et de Monstres de L'Imaginaire in Paris, France.
the idea was to show that monsters aren't always as scary as we think. i chose to represent the brazilian folclore as we have our monsters, that we actually love.
we have iara, the mermaid that seduces and then eats the fishermen. she is an icon, epic. and there is even a prayer against her charm, which of course i inserted in the poster. besides, i opted to brink element of her imaginary universe, such as the tears from the fishermen that she holds in a ceramic pot, the elements of her vanity are what make her, such as the perfume, the mirror and the hair brush. iara is the apex of beauty. she's the one that lives at the bottom of the sea and she wants company down there, so i get her, she's not a monster, she's just powerful enough to get what she wants.
then we have boto cor de rosa. boto is a dolphin, but not a simple one, clearly or he wouldn't be here. boto is an amazonian pink dolphin (he reallly exists) that turns into a beautiful young man on the full moon nights and seduces married women, take them to the bottom of the river he lives in and impregnate them.
again, i chose to represent his imaginary universe: the copo americano and the cachaça that he drinks when it's full moon, the hat he uses as he is a malandro, the card and the dice as he's playing around and playing a game with these women.
he's got borogodó and charm, he's not a monster. this legend is known and loved in brazil, it's about accepting our monsters.
last but never least we have cuca. cuca is an alligator, she is the one that really frightens us, but we love her. she likes eating little disobedient children so our parents alway made sure we behaved and knew that. cuca leaves alone in the amazonian rainforest and you can know her as as the boogey man.
the elements of her universe are also depicted in the poster; the sword and the búzios necklace to protect you from her, the shining star crown that give her power and the eyes, she can have you by her stare and the moon and stars because it all happens in the night.
cuca, again, is not a monster, she is really just misunderstood. cuca helped me behave when i was little, how can she be a monster if she helps little children?
she's an icon, independant.
